How Hospital Clocks Are Saving The Healthcare Industry

As politicians argue over trillions of dollars in healthcare reform, simple hospital clocks are providing real savings to the healthcare industry today. This new generation of synchronized clocks that tie into the hospital’s computer network is cutting costs in many ways.

Synchronized Shift Changes

If it’s 5:00 where you are, is it 5:00 upstairs? Maybe not. It might be 5:01 or 4:59. That may not seem like much of a difference, but if the lab closes at 5 and a doctor needs to know if there is still time to get a test in, it matters. Synchronized hospital clocks ensure everyone in the hospital is on the same time.

Time synchronization goes farther than that. All network clocks work off standard internet time signals so they all read the same time, adjusted for time zone. This means all branches of a hospital system are on the same time. Shift changes occur at the right time, ensuring patients are not left without qualified medical staff on duty, and that no ward is double-staffed.

Reduced Liability

Malpractice is a serious concern in the healthcare industry, and often malpractice suits stem from simple mistakes. Hospital clocks reduce errors by keeping everyone on the same schedule. Medication is administered when needed. Nurses making notes on charts record the time precisely. Doctors start rounds on time. Everyone gets to the operating room at the right moment.

Commercial clocks use bright LED displays with large, easy to read numbers that leave no doubt as to exactly what time it is. The clocks automatically adjust for daylight savings, and reset themselves after a power failure. Since they are powered over the network, they can be kept running during a blackout by a standard UPS system. As long as the time is being displayed, hospital personnel know it is the right time.

Inexpensive To Install

One of the biggest cost savings in today’s synchronized clocks is that healthcare facilities no longer have to bring in an electrician to install them. Nor do they require constant battery replacement, which is both costly and environmentally unfriendly. They use a technology called Power over Ethernet (PoE) and draw their electricity over the hospital’s computer network. No dangerous power lines need to be run to the clocks, so they can be installed by the hospital’s own IT staff.

This flexibility makes it easy to mount them wherever they are needed. No longer is the clock placed near an outlet, even if that location makes the timepiece hard to read. Hospital clocks can be mounted anywhere in a matter of minutes.

Synchronized clocks provide savings immediately as they improve hospital operational efficiency, raise patient care quality and reduce power consumption. The savings may not be large, but they accumulate every day across every clock placed. Install network-based hospital clocks and cut health costs without endangering patient health.

Essential Communication Skills Needed in Home Nurse And Hospital Nursing Training

Essential Communication Skills Needed in Home Nurse And Hospital Nursing Training

Nurses Communication Skills Training is Inadequate yet Essential:

I will list 3 essential skills that all nurses need for better nursing and to prevent burnout. Many nursing schools seem to be lack teaching some of these skills that could make a nurseing profession easier and more rewarding. Did you know, that two questions can save you from burnout. The same two questions can build trust between you, the patient, the patients family or the attending doctor.

Here is a list of 3 essential communication skills that you need to enjoy your job, make your job easier and to enjoy communication with the people that you come in contact with.

1 Self Empathy Skills:

Self empathy is an understanding of what YOU may be experiencing in a moment. It is also a proactive communication not reactive. Self empathy will help you to enjoy your job more and also keep you from burnout. This is a skill that you do before you go to work and during those trying times of stress, confusion and maybe even when anger develops. IT is your emotional first aid and also a technique that will help you build a positive intention before going to work. The beauty of this skill, is it only takes seconds. It is not meditation, yet can be much faster bringing focus, joy and calm in seconds.

2: Empathy skills:

For this discussion empathy is a deep understanding of what someone may be experiencing. It could be the patient, the patients family, your peers, or the attending doctor’s. One motto that you may want to use is “empathy before education”. We have been brought up to educate before really understanding another. Using empathy skills, we want to understand before we educate someone. This can also be called fix-it language and happens many times. When we are hurried, stressed, or in pain from what we are hearing from the other person, we use this dysfunctional language..

When we offer someone empathy our energy builds, the other person’s energy builds, and there is a connection developed between both people. This develops trust. If we offer someone a story or education, advice or even sympathy, we can lose the connection with them quickly, and lose their trust.

3: Expressing Honestly:

Without this skill burnout is probable. If we cannot express ourselves honestly and with compassion, any stress or anger we have, will build up until we blow up. If we can express ourselves honestly and functionally without using blame, shame, guilt or fear, our energy will build and trust will also build with the other person. Again we are using proactive communication skills, not dysfunctional.

These are three essential skills that one needs to be able to function in a stressful nursing job. Without these skills you will probably be heading for burnout instead of a profession that can be lucrative, emotionally and physically. It is your choice to learn these skills or risk physical and emotional challenges.

The Importance Of Neonatal Nursing In Hospitals With Neonatal Intensive Care Units

Nurses assigned to hospital maternity wards, nurseries, or neonatal intensive care units (NICU) for critically ill infants are known as neonatal nurses. Neonatal nursing is a specialized field that allows a registered nurse to train for the care of newborns during their first 28 days of life. A good number of major hospitals in the country, particularly hospitals that have NICUs, provide training programs in neonatal care for registered nurses who find their calling in the care of neonates, as these newborns are called.

Training for critically ill neonates is included in these training programs in hospitals with NICUs. Nurses who want to specialize in this area will also need considerable experience in acute care pediatrics, as well as in adult care nursing.

Neonatal nurses are healthcare professionals whose responsibilities include directly reporting to neonatologists and specialists in critically ill infant care, interacting with parents of these neonates, and make decisions as well as supervise the kind of neonate procedure and care to be undertaken at any given moment. A neonatal nurse’s supervisory capacity will depend on the NICU facility or hospital they work in.

To take on neonatal nursing, a registered nurse needs to complete a Master’s degree program, or take up continuing nursing education courses for this particular specialty. As a neonatal nurse practitioner or neonatal healthcare nurse, they will need to learn how to care for infants who are healthy, premature, have developmental problems, or are critically ill. They will also need to learn how to interact with families and how them the appropriate care for their newborns, as well as how best to deal with the situation of a critically ill or premature neonate.

Not only is the neonatal nurse supposed to care for her patients, it is given to her charge to help assuage the confusion, panic or grief of any stricken infant’s family. This spells the difference between doctors and neonatal nurses: the ability to care for infants, and spend time hearing their parents’ concerns.

Many family members often find that neonatal nurses are more approachable compared to other members of a hospital’s medical staff. Neonatal nurses, particularly in hospitals with NICUs, are always available to see and speak with parents about their concerns, particularly when their neonatologist has a high caseload and doesn’t have the time to deal with distraught family members. This is where the expertise of neonatal nursing lends a hand.

The Difference Between Private And Government Hospitals

Usually, people in the UK prefer the NHS instead of going to private hospitals. People nowadays do not actually invest on health care simply because they also have other necessities that must be fulfilled aside from hospitalization and medicine. But, you need to be aware that they are different from each other in a lot of ways. People who have been in a private hospital can probably tell the differences of the two types of hospitals.

For government hospitals, you do not have to pay for a lot except for the prescribed medications that you will have to buy. In contrast, a private hospital usually provides medical care together with an equal value in money. It means that for every medical care that they provide their patients, there is usually an equal price. This is the only visible advantage of government hospitals over private health providers. People who can afford private health providers consider them instead of government hospitals.

The choosing starts when you already entered both the two types of hospitals. If you will notice, there is a long line of patients who are waiting to be treated inside an NHS hospital. Only expect to be prioritized if you are in a critical condition. If you are not in a critical condition and you entered an NHS, you will not be prioritized by the management. Wasting time is another story for patients so they consider waiting as a disadvantage. Another thing is that patients tend to wait for long hours before the doctor can attend to them. You have no choice but to wait since there are also other patients on the hospital.

These kinds of situations do not happen inside a private health facility. The patients inside a private hospital are usually given fair priority. You will be immediately accommodated once you enter the vicinity of the hospital. In a private health facility, falling in line does not happen often. The best thing about a private health provider is the privacy that you can have since they provide rooms for one person.

Insurance can provide a big difference on the price that you have to pay for private health facilities. It means that if ever you had an unexpected accident and you want to go to a private health provider, insurance can help you on your bills. Insurance can help you if you met their condition so they will provide money to help you with all your medical needs.

How to Reduce Your Hospital Bills

If possible, keep your own lists of tests, medications, and treatments. Hospitals have been known to charge men for pregnancy tests and adults for newborn tests.

– Never pay the bill before leaving the hospital. You may be told this is required, but it is not. Before paying your bill read it carefully, and compare it to the estimated costs you were given before being admitted.

– Demand an itemized bill, and ask for a detailed explanation for any items you don’t understand. Don’t accept generic answers like “lab fees” or “miscellaneous fees”.

Health Savings Accounts Promote Price Transparency

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are plans that have a high deductible, and a savings account in which tax-deductible contributions can be placed. The money in the account can be used to pay deductibles and other charges not covered by health insurance.

The great promise of health savings accounts is that they will re-inject market competition into the healthcare market. As all of us who were fortunate enough to take Economics 101 understand, the balance of supply and demand provides the public with the greatest value at the lowest possible cost. If company B can produce and distribute the same quality widgets as company A, but at a lower cost, then the average price of widgets will fall, more people will be able to afford more widgets, and the average quality of a widget will increase, as businesses compete for customers. This is a wonderful system, and is part of what has made the United States the wealthiest country in the world.

Unfortunately, this system has not been in play when it comes to healthcare, because the consumer has not typically been paying the bill. As a result, the consumer doesn’t care what the service costs, and most doctors, hospitals, and pharmacies are very reluctant to reveal their (high) prices.

Health Savings Accounts are now changing all that. Millions of people have purchased these plans because of the lower premiums and tax advantages they offer. This has made consumers much more aware of what they are being charged. By demanding to know prices up front, HSA holders will begin to force medical providers to compete on price and quality, just like any other business does.

The History of Hospital Food

Food within hospitals has for centuries played an important part in healing and recovery. Today, catering systems can be highly advanced mobile units which allow staff to prepare and feed patients right by their beds although this was not always the case.

In fact, however dubious the medical practices, in medieval Europe the value of hospital food was well understood by practitioners. Hospitals at this time were rarely operated by secular members of society and instead were the mainstay of the church, with many doctors doubling as clerics and many of the support staff being monks. It was these monks that usually prepared meals for patients.

In other parts of the world hospital food also played an important role, in some Islamic countries chroniclers speak of food which would have been suitable for nobles and kings. Many historians have argued that the high quality of care in the secular hospitals that were built in urban areas were a considerable achievement with medieval Islamic society.

Within Europe in later centuries the function of hospitals and those offering the care also changed. This was particularly the case in the eighteenth and nineteenth century where the monastery hospitals began to be replaced by more professional hospitals run by the military. Once again hospital food remained and important element within the recovery process although most hospital diets consisted of bread, beef and beer, although the serving of alcohol did diminish in the latter stages of this period.

Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries a greater understanding of the role that food played in healing was gained. Termed nutritional science hospitals now comprehended that there was a direct correlation between the food given to a patient and healing times and meals had to be carefully planned to ensure patients received all of the nutrients they needed.

Today hospital food is as important as ever although tight budgetary restraints and pressures on staff mean that hospitals are now looking for evermore advanced and efficient methods of food preparation which do not sacrifice taste, presentation or nutritional value.

Patient’s Birthday Wishes Benefit Shriners Hospitals

Osteogenesis imperfecta are big words, especially for a 6-year-old. But the words are a medical term that Leigh Dittman is not only able to easily say; she knows exactly what it means.

Leigh was registered as a patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa before she was even born. Her parents realized their baby would need orthopaedic care when technicians noticed Leigh’s legs were shorter than normal during one of Ellen Dittman’s sonograms. Doctors were unable to diagnose the problem before Leigh’s birth but knew it was orthopaedic-related. Ellen and her husband, David, contacted the Tampa Shriners Hospital.

When Leigh was born, she measured only 15.5 inches long, and doctors discovered she had broken five ribs and fractured a femur in utero. A few hours after her birth, Leigh was diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a genetic disorder caused by imperfectly formed bone collagen. The condition is commonly known as “brittle bone disease” and is characterized by bones that break easily, often from little or no apparent cause.

First Treatment At 3 Weeks Old

Leigh received her first treatment at the Tampa Shriners Hospital when she was three weeks old. She now goes in every few months to receive intravenous medicine meant to increase bone density, but Leigh usually stops by the hospital at least once a month to visit her doctors and the many friends she’s made there. “We love it,” said Ellen. “That hospital is like our second home.”

In appreciation of the loving care Leigh receives at the Tampa hospital, the Dittman family began raising money for Shriners Hospitals. “It was actually Leigh’s idea,” said Ellen. “She says Shriners helps her, so she wanted to help them.”

An Overwhelming Response

Beginning with Leigh’s fourth birthday party in 2004, the Dittmans asked that, in lieu of bringing gifts, guests donate money to Shriners Hospitals. Due to the overwhelming response from loved ones and the community, Leigh and her family decided to make it an annual fundraising event.

Approximately 450 people attended Leigh’s sixth birthday party in August. The event, which included dinner, a special video about the Tampa Shriners Hospital, a chance drawing, a silent auction and dancing, raised more than $50,000. In total, Leigh’s birthday party extravaganzas have resulted in nearly $78,000 in donations to the Tampa Shriners Hospital.

Leigh and her father, David, accept a donation to the Leigh Dittman Foundation. Leigh’s third-annual fundraising event raised more than $50,000 for the Tampa Shriners Hospital.
